What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound, or sonography, is a non-invasive technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of organs, tissue and blood flow. It uses no ionising radiation, which makes it well suited to pregnancy and to frequent follow-up.

Ultrasound at Medilab

We offer high-resolution scans performed by sonographers and interpreted by radiologists, on digital Doppler-capable machines.

Available scan types

  • Abdominal — liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, pancreas
  • Pelvic — uterus, ovaries, bladder, transabdominal or transvaginal
  • Obstetric — fetal growth and position, amniotic fluid, placental health
  • Soft tissue — thyroid, lymph nodes, muscle injuries
  • Vascular / Doppler — carotid arteries, leg veins, DVT screening
  • Prostate and scrotal — for urological assessment
  • Breast — lump evaluation and cyst identification

Why ultrasound

  • Radiation-free and safe at any age
  • Real-time, so it suits moving structures such as the heart and blood flow
  • Can guide biopsies, drainage and fluid localisation
  • Non-invasive and usually painless
  • No sedation and no recovery time

Procedure & preparation

  • Fasting may be required for abdominal studies, typically six to eight hours
  • A full bladder is required for pelvic scans
  • Comfortable, private room — gowns and gel provided
